First-Time Mosaic Lamp Workshop in SoMa: Step-by-Step

You have never done a mosaic lamp workshop before. You are not sure what to expect, whether you can actually do it, or what the finished product looks like. Here is the honest, step-by-step walkthrough.

Before the Session

You do not need to prepare anything. Craft for Team provides all materials — the lamp base, 16 glass tile colors, tile nippers, adhesive, grout, and any tools required. Show up at 360 Ritch St, Suite 205, at your scheduled time. Workstations are set up before you arrive.

Closed-toe shoes are recommended since small tile pieces can occasionally fall to the floor during cutting. Wear something comfortable that you are not precious about — grout can stain fabric.

Step 1: Color Selection

The session opens with color selection. You choose from 16 glass tile colors to create your palette. This is more interesting than it sounds — the color choices dramatically affect how the lamp looks when lit. Ambers and golds produce warm, candlelight tones. Blues and greens go bolder and more dramatic. Mixed palettes create a stained-glass window effect.

Most people spend 10–15 minutes at this stage. The instructor can help if you are unsure how colors will interact under light.

Step 2: Understanding the Lamp Base

Your lamp base is a geometric frame — a structure that the tiles will adhere to. The instructor walks through how to work with the shape: which sections to tile first, how to handle corners and edges, and what mistakes to avoid in placement.

This overview takes about 10 minutes and sets you up for the main work phase with enough confidence to move forward.

Step 3: Tiling

You cut tiles to size using tile nippers (the instructor demonstrates the technique — it is easy to learn) and adhere pieces to the lamp base, section by section. The work is precise and absorbing. Most people hit a rhythm within the first 20–30 minutes.

This is the longest phase of the session — approximately 60–75 minutes. It is also where most conversation happens, since the work requires consistent attention but not intense concentration.

Step 4: Grouting

Once tiles are set, you apply grout — a powdery mixture that fills the gaps between tiles and gives the piece its polished, finished look. The instructor demonstrates application, and you work it over the surface before wiping away the excess.

Grouting is satisfying in a specific way: the lamp before grouting looks raw and patchy; after grouting and wiping, the design locks in and looks professional. The transformation takes about 20–30 minutes.

Step 5: The Reveal

At the end of the session, the lamp is fitted with a light source and turned on. This is consistently the best moment. Under light, the colored glass comes alive — the pattern glows, the colors shift, and the piece looks nothing like a beginner craft project.

Most participants did not expect it to look this good. That gap between expectation and result is part of what makes mosaic lamp one of the most memorable workshops in the SoMa lineup.

Taking Your Lamp Home

You take the lamp home the same day. Grout needs 24 hours to fully harden — the lamp is transportable immediately but benefits from careful handling during that first day. The studio provides packaging to keep the piece stable during your commute.

Once grout has cured, the lamp is fully functional and indefinitely durable.

Ready to Book Your SoMa Mosaic Lamp Workshop?

The reveal at the end of the session — lamp base fitted, light switched on, colored glass glowing for the first time — is the moment most participants didn't see coming. You spend two hours cutting and placing tile, and then it turns on and looks like something you'd actually buy. That gap between expectation and result is what makes this one of the more memorable workshops in the SoMa lineup.

Sessions run approximately two hours, all materials are included, and every participant takes home a fully functional lamp the same day. Mobile arrangements for SF office events are also available — a $100–200 travel fee applies, and logistics get sorted when you book.
